KMD Brands pioneers new emissions tool

Better decisions start with better data. That’s why we’ve expanded our partnership with Worldly – the sustainability data and analytics platform for the consumer goods industry.
KMD Brands is the first outdoor apparel brand globally to adopt Worldly’s Product Impact Calculator, a new tool bringing sharper focus to Scope 3 carbon footprint of individual products.
At KMD Brands, as with much of the apparel and retail industry, Scope 3 emissions are significantly higher than our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The emissions created through the manufacturing of our materials and production of our products represent the largest portion of our overall footprint.
“Knowing the emission footprint of individual products is the first step to reducing it,” says Shasta O’Loughlin, Head of ESG at KMD Brands.

From spend to specifics
Until now, sustainability teams were stuck wrangling spreadsheets and relying on blunt, spend-based estimates to calculate Scope 3 emissions. The data relied heavily on assumptions, making the insights vague.
Launched in 2024, Worldly’s Product Impact Calculator delivers detailed, product-by-product emissions data using real information from factories.
“This tool will bring greater transparency to where we can make a more meaningful impact,” Shasta says. “With that insight, we’ll be better placed to reduce emissions and design for a lower-carbon future.”
From insight to impact
KMD Brands already uses Worldly’s factory-level Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM), brand-level Higg Brand and Retailer Module (BRM) to track impact and Higg Facility Social Labor Module (FSLM) to monitor social compliance within our factories. Now, we’re applying the Product Impact Calculator to our apparel range – from boardshorts and puffer jackets to swimwear and wetsuits – with footwear to follow.

As global expectations for transparency increase - especially in Europe - KMD Brands’ progress in emissions tracking is both timely and forward-looking.

What’s next?
With time, KMD Brands anticipates needing to consider carbon reporting with a similar rigour that is applied to financial metrics.
The partnership with Worldly reflects KMD Brands’ broader ambition: to source more responsibly, design more circularly, and act decisively on climate.
