Last week, Waimea Bay hosted the opening ceremony of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, one of surfing’s most iconic events.

The invitational honours Eddie Aikau’s legacy as a lifeguard, surfer, and waterman, celebrating courage and respect for the ocean. Known for its challenge, The Eddie only runs when wave faces consistently reach 40 feet, making it one of the sport’s most prestigious competitions.

This year’s ceremony also paid tribute to Clyde Aikau, Eddie’s brother, 1986 Event Champion, who passed away earlier this year.

In its second year partnering with the Eddie Aikau Foundation, Rip Curl continues to support the event both on and off the water. Beyond attending the ceremony, Rip Curl helps raise awareness of the Foundation’s mission, provides resources for competitors, and celebrates the Aikau legacy through community and ocean stewardship initiatives.

The partnership also reflects Rip Curl’s strategic interest in Hawaii, a key surf market and cultural hub for the brand. The ceremony included a Hawaiian blessing, hula, and the introduction of competitors - ranging from seasoned veterans to first-time invitees—who received their jerseys before the traditional ocean blessing from the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.

“We are honoured to be here at Waimea Bay for our second Opening Ceremony,” said James Taylor, Rip Curl General Manager of Marketing. “Supporting The Eddie allows us to celebrate Eddie’s legacy, contribute to the Aikau Ohana, and strengthen our connection to Hawaii and the surfing community.”

The holding period runs from 7 December through 6 March 2026. In its 41-year history, The Eddie has run just 11 times, making it one of surfing’s rarest and most revered competitions.
